I’m a big believer in doing things myself whenever possible. Is it because I love to save money? Sure! If by ‘saving’ you mean not spending on one expensive thing so I can spend on another expensive thing. To be frank, the reason I am obsessed with the ‘DIY’ route is because I find it to be the best creative outlet and a refreshing reminder of my self-sufficiency.
I was super excited (and mildly tempted) when I stumbled upon an amazing line of body scrubs with pictures of gorgeous women and beautiful scenery that made all sorts of remarkable promises and had me eagerly adding to my cart. The website was elegant but quirky, and I wanted to be apart of the community. When the time came to check out, I stopped myself. Do I really need to pay someone else to prepare a body scrub with a bunch of ingredients I can find around the house, package it, charge me way too much, and then wait 8-10 business days to receive it when what I really want is to have it here and now? I mean sure the pictures are drop-dead gorgeous and it would be satisfying to be part of the online brand and community they’ve generated, but is that temporary feeling worth shovelling out hard-earned cash when I could make it for a fraction of the price at home?
I’ve become better at logically evaluating ‘have to have’ purchases. It turns out, for the most part, the things I ‘have to have’ are really just things I ‘want to have’. I’ll post about my shopaholic struggles and ways to overcome these temptations later. For now, here is my favourite DIY recipe for the perfect body scrub!
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon peppermint
Mix the above in a bowl and put the contents into a mason jar if you have left overs! All you have to do once you’ve mixed this baby up is shower, massage the sugar scrub onto your body (starting to sound pretty steamy, huh?), and rinse! Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturizer on its own and its impact is maximized when combined with the wonderful scents of vanilla and peppermint and the added exfoliating results of the brown sugar!
